Which area to choose in Rio?

The advice that we found and followed was to stay near the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema or Leblon. Now we want to pass on the same advice as we found it very useful. We stayed in Favela Cantagalo, which is 15 minutes away from Copacabana beach and 10 minutes away from Ipanema on foot.

However, we found the Ipanema area to be friendlier so we spent more time there. We didn't get to Leblon as we knew it was more expensive than the other two. Copacabana beach boulevard is beautiful as well, but the streets leading to the favela were darker.

Either way, in any of the three areas you choose to stay, you will have public transportation close-by. We used buses and the metro when we visited the city center, Christ the Redeemer Statue, when we went to the Carnival.

Metro stops near the beach:

  • Cantagalo station (close to Copacabana) - underground
  • General Osorio station (close to Ipanema) - underground
  • Nossa Senhora da Paz station (close to Ipanema) - overground
  • Garcia D'Avila station (between Ipanema and Leblon) - overground
  • Jardim De Alah station (close to Leblon) - overground

We searched for a room with an en-suite bathroom and breakfast included, that was close to Ipanema/Copacabana, was clean and had great reviews on Booking.com. Therefore we chose Pousada Favela Cantagalo, and it was a great experience. We had a fantastic view of the favela and the sea and the staff was great.
